How We Rank Antarctica Cruise Operators

Our rankings are determined by five objective criteria, weighted by their impact on actual traveler experience. No operator pays for placement or ranking position.

Our Methodology

We evaluate expedition cruise operators against five criteria, each weighted by its real-world impact on the traveler experience in Antarctica. Rankings are reviewed and updated every six months, or when a material change occurs (new ship, IAATO membership change, significant pattern in reviews).

  1. 30%

    IAATO Compliance and Ship Size

Verified IAATO membership and fleet passenger capacity. We assess landing frequency directly from ship capacity relative to the 100-person shore limit. Ships under 115 passengers score highest; ships over 500 passengers cannot land and are excluded from rankings.

  2. 25%

    Expedition Team Quality

Guide-to-guest ratio, published naturalist and specialist credentials, coverage of key disciplines (ornithology, glaciology, marine biology, photography). We verify credentials through operator websites and cross-reference against traveler feedback.

  3. 20%

    Verified Traveler Ratings

Google Reviews rating and volume. Minimum 20 verified reviews required for inclusion. We weight overall rating alongside patterns in review text โ€” specifically mentions of shore time, expedition team performance, and landings. We do not use operator-hosted testimonials.

  4. 15%

    Itinerary Variety

Range of routes offered: Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Circle crossing, South Georgia and Falklands, fly-cruise options. Operators offering multiple route types score higher, reflecting greater flexibility for returning travelers.

  5. 10%

    Activity Inclusions

What is included in the base fare versus charged as an add-on. Kayaking, camping, citizen science, and snowshoeing included at no extra cost score higher than equivalents charged separately.

Update Policy

Rankings are reviewed and updated every six months. Trigger events for out-of-cycle updates include: a change in a listed operator's IAATO membership status, the introduction or retirement of a significant vessel, or a sustained change in verified traveler rating (defined as a rating shift of ยฑ0.3 stars over 30+ new reviews).
